Testing AI trading, #3: Applied Materials

I’m writing this on the night I bought, before I know how it ends. This is my third trade in a small experiment: Claude makes the call, I decide, and I write it all down before the result.

Why I am doing this

I looked at the six-month chart on Yahoo Finance and felt there was room for it to grow back.

AMAT was on my watch list from 20 October. I’d put in a buy that day and cancelled it. This time it passed my own entry rule, so it came back.

What I believed before the trade

AMAT had fallen hard. It closed at USD 377.24 on 23 October, roughly a third below where it traded on 2 October. On 26 October it closed at USD 387.59, above the previous day’s high of USD 384.33. That is my entry rule: a close above the previous day’s high, a sign the slide may be pausing.

I believed a bounce of about 10% was possible over the next two weeks, before earnings on 12 November. I didn’t believe the chip-equipment slump was over.

The evidence available at the time

The case for

  • 26 Oct 2026: closed at USD 387.59, above the 23 Oct high of USD 384.33. The entry rule fired.
  • 26 Oct 2026: Applied announced it would raise its stake in BE Semiconductor to about 20%.
  • 27 Oct 2026: pre-market around USD 396.78, up about 2.4%.
  • 26 Oct 2026: analyst consensus still “Moderate Buy” (MarketBeat), most price targets far above the price.

The case against

  • 26 Oct 2026: price well below the 50-day (about USD 467) and 200-day (about USD 488) averages.
  • 23 Oct 2026: Barron’s warned the trouble for chip-equipment stocks may be just starting.
  • 22 Oct 2026: fell 8.2% in one day as chip stocks broke down.
  • Earnings on 12 Nov 2026, inside the hold window.

What Claude suggested

Buy 3 shares at a limit of USD 397.00, and skip it if it opened above USD 403. Stop at USD 377.00, GTC, attached to the buy ticket, just under the 26 October low. Price alert at about +10%. Decision point 11 November, the day before earnings. Verdict: amber. The pushback: this is one green day inside a downtrend, and it can fail.

What I decided

I took the call as given: 3 shares, limit USD 397.00, stop USD 377.00. After the fill I set the alert at USD 432.00, 10% above what I actually paid, instead of the USD 437.00 from the call.

The pushback: this is one green day inside a downtrend, and it can fail.

How it was executed

I placed a limit buy for 3 shares at USD 397.00 before the open, with the stop loss attached on the same ticket, GTC. This time the stop went in with the buy, the lesson from my first trade.

Buy ticket: 3 AMAT, limit 397.00, stop 377.00 attached, GTC
Buy ticket: 3 AMAT, limit 397.00, stop 377.00 attached, GTC

The order filled at the open at USD 392.37, below my limit. The stop showed under Open Orders straight away.

Fill at USD 392.37 and the 377.00 stop under Open Orders
Fill at USD 392.37 and the 377.00 stop under Open Orders

Then I set the profit-side alert.

Price alert at USD 432.00
Price alert at USD 432.00

The ticker, the size, the price, the stop and the target were Claude’s; the decision was mine.

What would make this wrong

If the bounce was just a pause in the slide, the stop at USD 377.00 takes me out for a loss of about USD 46 plus fees. If chip-equipment stocks keep falling on spending worries, one good day means nothing. And earnings on 12 November can move the price either way, so I’ll decide on 11 November whether to hold through it.

What happened next

27 October 2026. On 20 October I had a buy in for the same 3 shares at a limit of USD 426.00, with a stop at USD 405.00, and cancelled it before it filled. AMAT traded below 405 the next session and closed at USD 377.24 on 23 October, so that order would most likely have been stopped out. Tonight I bought the same 3 shares at USD 392.37.

Added 31 October 2026. I now add a Basic TA block to every trade post. This one uses only daily bars up to the last close before I bought.
