Dunedin and the Otago coast

A stop in Alexandra for petrol, an evening walk in Dunedin, Baldwin Street on foot, the gardens at Larnach Castle and the beach at Moeraki.

A long, ornate railway station of dark stone with cream trim, a red-tiled roof and a tall clock tower, behind clipped hedges and a lawn under a cloudy evening sky.

Petrol in Alexandra

On 27 November, we left the Queenstown area and drove towards Dunedin. On the way, we passed through Alexandra. We went there for a practical reason: we needed petrol. After refuelling, we stopped briefly for a rest and something to eat or drink.

An evening in Dunedin

In Dunedin, we explored the city on foot. The grandparents did not join this walk. We saw Dunedin Railway Station and the First Church of Otago.

A tall, pale stone church spire rising above trees and red flowering shrubs, with an apartment building at the left, under a grey sky.

We also had dinner at Emerson’s Brewery.

Up Baldwin Street

On 28 November, we visited Baldwin Street. We didn’t just stop at the bottom: we walked all the way up.

A very steep, straight residential street climbing between hedges, gardens and power poles, with a few people walking up it under a clear blue sky.

The gardens at Larnach Castle

We also visited Larnach Castle on the Otago Peninsula. We explored the grounds and the surrounding area, especially the gardens.

Moeraki

On the way north, we stopped at Moeraki. First we went to a restaurant for something to eat or drink. Afterwards, we walked down to the beach to see the round boulders.

From there, we continued north towards Methven.
