Part 1 of 4Japan, June 2026

Arrival and Tokyo

A large red temple gate with a huge red paper lantern hanging at its centre and guardian statues in its side bays, with a crowd of visitors walking and taking photographs in front of it.
Asakusa, Tokyo, 15 June.

This was our first trip to Japan. Tokyo was on the list mainly because of my son, who had been asking to go for months because of Pokémon and Kirby.

We took the train from Narita into Tokyo that evening, and stayed in an Airbnb.

Tokyo

We started in Asakusa, at the gate with the large red lantern, and went on to the temple’s main hall. By midday we were at the foot of the Tokyo Skytree.

At Tokyo Solamachi we went to the Pokémon shop and the Kirby Café. My son came away with a large collection of Pokémon cards and some toys from the Kirby Café. We spent more than I expected, but this was the part of Tokyo he had been waiting for.

Tokyo

In the morning we walked in Shinjuku Gyoen. In the early afternoon we were at a large shrine in Shibuya, and later in the day we were back in Shinjuku.
